to quit the casino! lol

I started a new job, waitressing at a diner near my house. I am going to wait, to see just how many shifts I can get in a week, but the tips are really good so far. I worked 3 hours on Friday in a 3 table section and made $50. Today I'm working and I'll be having a 5 table section, so we'll see how good I make out today.

I LOVE the work at the casino, but there are many downsides to it. It's a longer shift, later getting home. I was hired in May and I've only worked 5 times. I did know that I was hired as a casual worker, so I was warned ahead of time. I just don't want to have to give up the more conveninent diner shifts to work the casino shifts. I am going to see how many casino shifts I will end up getting, but I think if they start to interfere with the diner, I might have to quit the casino.

What do you think I should do?

2 weeks, normally. And the diner did say that they are flexible. I'm sure I can do both, but I don't know if I want to! lol

I think you have a good plan. Wait and see give it a few weeks at least.

No, not Peters. The St. Joachim Diner. I used to work there when it was Pickles but now it's new owners. I really like it so far!

The casino is great money, but I really do hate working till 2am! lol The diner, I'm home by 10. I'm gonna try to do both for a while. See what happens.

I would do both, if the Casino is only every once in a while the money is really good you could probably handle it every once in a while.

Yup- I would do both as well. If and when they start to conflict, then you might have to make a choice, but for now I'd do both

hopefully the diner will work around it, or maybe you could swap a shift there or something. I would wait it out and see, if it starts becomming a frequent conflict, then I would quit the Casino..
Plus you want to make sure the diner lasts and doesnt close out again.

I'd do both for now bt if it came down to the point where you had to choose cuz you were schedualed on the same day, I'd go with the diner. It's more convenient, steady, and they are willing to work around you. You don't find a lot employers that actual care that someone has a life and a family outside of work anymore.

If they start to conflict coming up on Christmas, I would find out if the Casino work is picking up because of the holidays or if it will remain consistent once January hits. I'd try to swing both for a short stretch (because who doesn't need extra cash around the holidays?!) then make a plan from there. I do agree that the diner sounds closer (cuts gas cost), more workable as far as when you need to be there and more consistent long term. I don't want to be debby downer but I've had friends work their entire lives around trying to get more work with the Casino and they treat people like disposable scabs. :(

It is going to start slowing down at the casino until the holidays. Maybe put word out with some coworkers there that you are looking to possibly give away some shifts. Any chance you could "tough it out" until April? (Contract time). If worse comes to worst- you get 5 unsubstantiated calls a year plus ESA days and as PT you can give one shift away per pay period as well. Not sure if this would work for you...but I know that a few part timers in my dept have asked that they not get scheduled more than 24 hrs a week -so they can collect EI at the same time. Maybe ask your scheduling clerk or supvr what the rules might be for your dept?

BUT...be prepared to work through the holidays...even christmas and especially new years eve. THAT is the worst part of working there :(
