Oh I am really saddened by this! We had plans to hurry up and get both kids' passports after the baby is born and we get the birth certificate (and I was going to order my son's long form at the same time). This way we could get it before he turns three. Now I'm thinking maybe I should get his right away. :-(

But the current passports are only good for 5 years - so $87.....the new ones are good for ten years. So you would have paid more than $160 anyway....

I'd rather get one for 10 years and not have to deal with it again.

Yes I don't know why so many people are upset. Better to go less often and it actually costs less. I'm just upset about the kids' prices.

The only 'upset' I have is with the jump in kid prices. Time to renew for dd1 and to get one for the baby jic we do end up going away like we would like to.

If I dont' get my passport before July 1 I will not be getting it until necessary. I'll just continue to not cross the border. Mine expired in Oct and I have only missed it a few times. My BF still has his if he needs to take a trip to Cabellas or something he'll just have to do it alone. I will not pay those prices because I can't afford it and a passport is not really a necessity.

BUT, then again, living in Windsor it almost is necessary to have one. If someone you love is rushed to a US hospital because the Canadian ones that can handle them are too far away, you need a passport (or EDL) without delay.

For some people this would make a passport a necessity, for me the mimal risk of this doesn't deem it a necessity.

The 5yr went up to 120. I can't find an extra 160 in my budget. Coming up with 87 has been difficult (hence no passport since Oct) I may, eventually come up with 120 but, that is one HELL of a jump!!

My complaint is the government "forcing" a 10yr passport on people. Not many will look at those prices and get a 5yr (only people like me that the extra 60 is not in the budget).

They are making more than ever off passports...WHY the need to increase the costs to get one? Will this save the jobs of people in the passport offices? Doubtfull!
